Music

Intent

Music is fundamental to the enrichment of our lives. In the music department we provide opportunities for students to learn to enjoy and expand their knowledge of music in a very broad sense. We want our teaching to impact on students of all ages, levels and abilities and to stretch the gifted musician as well as provide opportunities for those who do not necessarily see themselves as musically inclined. A wide range of musical styles and traditions are given equal prominence with a view to opening students’ minds to what is available out there in the world of music.

Elements of music (our key words) are embedded in all our topics and are regularly revisited

The aims of our Music curriculum are to develop students who:

  • Develop an appreciation for a diverse range of music.

  • Listen to, review and evaluate music across a range of historical periods, genres, cultures, styles and traditions.

  • Sing and use their voices to create different effects.

  • Compose and arrange music in a variety of styles.

  • Use a range of musical language.

  • Make judgements and express personal preferences about the quality and style of music.

  • Participate in performances with an awareness of audience.
